Why Disney World Nighttime Shows Keep Dying

Nighttime entertainment is a big deal at Disney World and guests LOVE those nighttime shows.

You’ve got Happily Ever After in Magic Kingdom. You’ve got Fantasmic! and Wonderful World of Animation at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. You’ve got EPCOT Forever at EPCOT. Then you’ve got Disney’s Animal Kingdom…which has…nothing. But why?

Although Animal Kingdom doesn’t currently have a nighttime show (save for some fancy lighting on the Tree of Life, which doesn’t count), it’s had nighttime entertainment in the past. The first nighttime show there was The Jungle Book: Alive with Magic, which took place on Discovery River in 2016.  The show was a retelling of The Jungle Book with an Indian theme.

The Jungle Book show, though, was a placeholder for Rivers of Light, which had a delayed opening. Eventually, Rivers of Light DID debut in Animal Kingdom in 2017. The show used water, sound, and light to highlight the beauty of all living things.

The show was re-themed into Rivers of Light: We Are One in 2019. However, this show was suspended when Disney World closed in March 2020. In July 2020, Disney announced that the show would not be returning, leaving Animal Kingdom without a nighttime show.

So why is there no nighttime entertainment at Animal Kingdom? Well, one, fireworks can’t be used in the park because it wouldn’t be safe for the animals, so any show held there would need to be incorporated without that element.

Also, though, maybe guests just aren’t as interested in seeing nighttime entertainment at Animal Kingdom. Animal Kingdom is a completely different kind of theme park from the other three in Disney World, so guests spend the majority of their time seeing animals. Let’s face it — shows haven’t typically done well at Animal Kingdom. The 50th Anniversary show Kite Tails was so short-lived, we barely remember it.

There was even once a parade in Animal Kingdom, Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade. That parade closed in 2014 due to construction on Pandora. A parade never returned to Animal Kingdom.

There’s another thing to consider, too. Animal Kingdom usually closes much earlier than the other Disney World parks. Even in the summer, the park closes around 7PM. That doesn’t give a lot of nighttime for nighttime entertainment. About all that’s left to do when it’s actually dark in Animal Kingdom is to see the bioluminescence of Pandora.

So will nighttime entertainment ever return to Animal Kingdom? Judging from what we’ve seen over the past few years, we don’t think it’s likely. However, Disney could surprise us and make an announcement. The seating area on Discovery River that was built for Rivers of Light is still there and waiting for something to be done with it, after all.

But it comes down to the fact that there may not be a demand for nighttime entertainment in Animal Kingdom. That is, by and far, a greater concern. So Animal Kingdom just might have to be the only theme park in Disney World without a nighttime spectacular.
