The first episode of Loki premiered yesterday, and we are all for turning Wednesday into the new Friday after all the action we got to see unfold on the screen last night! And, it wouldn’t be a Marvel show if there weren’t some hidden details to explore — so, we’re unpacking them all here!

Thanks to the Marvel fans on the AllEars team, Insider, /Film, and Screen Crush, we’re bringing you a look at some of the biggest Easter eggs we spotted while watching the first episode of Loki!

Warning! Spoilers ahead!

Reference to Iron Man in the first scene

The show started off by catching us up on all the actions from Avengers: Endgame that led up to the series. And, where did Loki disappear off to after he stole the Tesseract? Well, the desert of course. And, big Marvel fans will likely find the first scene of Loki waking up in the desert quite familiar.

©Disney

According to an interview that Director Kate Herron did with Insider, this is actually a reference to the original Iron Man movie where Tony Stark crashes into the desert while testing the first few models of his Iron Man suit.

It’s Actually Loki in the Stained Glass Window

A little later on in the episode, we meet Agent Mobius at a crime scene with his team. A child is in the church-like building and when asked “who did this,” the kid responds by pointing up to a stained glass window.

Now, a lot of Marvel fans immediately thought it was a reference to the villain Mephisto (especially after how much WandaVision seemed to reference him), but the stained glass is actually a reference to Loki.

©Disney

The director of the episode, Kate Herron, confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that this is the case saying, “It’s honestly just a super weird coincidence. Like, it’s genuinely a reference to Loki — the horns, he was cast out of heaven, that’s what it’s a reference to.”

Potential Reference to Nightmare

But, there is another villain that the series seems to point to throughout the first episode — Nightmare. We noticed a few references to bad dreams and nightmares in WandaVisionand it seems that those references are bleeding into Loki as well.

When Mobius is walking Loki back to what seemed like an interrogation room, Loki looks out at the Time Variance Authority and says “This place is a nightmare.”

©Disney

And, Mobius responds with “That’s another department” and adds that he’d love to help Loki burn that place down. Now, yes this seems a little tongue and cheek, but it’s not the first time there’s been this sort of blatant reference to the villain in the Marvel universe.

©Disney

And, if that’s not enough to make you question whether Nightmare is the big baddie behind Loki, we also get a pretty good look at the bubblegum that the young boy hands over in the first scene with Mobius. Screen Crush points out that if you look closely at that “Kablooie,” you can see a face on the packaging that looks a whole lot like Nightmare from the comics.

Potential Reference to Kang the Conqueror

Nightmare isn’t the only villain who could be in play for Loki right now. At the end of the episode, agents from the Time Variance Authority go out to investigate a Nexus (more on that later) and find a shovel that is from the year 3000.

The upcoming movie, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, happens in the year 3000 of the Marvel Universe and Kang the Conqueror has already been announced by Marvel as the villain.

©Disney

But, that’s not the only Kang the Conqueror reference in the episode! In the short instructional video where Loki (and the viewer) learns all about the Time Variance Authority (TVA), we get to meet the “Time Keepers.” And, /Film points out that the Time Keeper in the middle looks pretty similar to Kang the Conqueror (aka the villain known for time-traveling) from the comics.

Josta Cola

The episode also has some fun pop-culture references that those with a keen eye will notice. For example, Insider noted that, in the interrogation room with Mobius and Loki, Mobius has brought in two cans of Josta Cola. This drink was introduced by PepsiCo back in 1995 and was the first energy drink from a major U.S. company to hit the market.

So, we guess time traveling can have its perks when you’re part of the Time Variance Authority.

D.B. Cooper Was a Real Person

While they’re in the interrogation room, Mobius also plays through Loki’s “greatest hits” and shows him a scene from when Loki came down to earth, boarded a plane with a bomb, stole money, and then disappeared. After the clip, Mobius says, “I can’t believe you were D.B. Cooper!”

©Disney

Well, D.B. Cooper is actually a real person from history who hijacked a plane with a bomb and escaped with $200,000 in cash back in 1971. He was never caught and is said to have “vanished” just probably not in the same way as Loki.

The TVA Has Confiscated a lot of Interesting Items

One of the things that shocked Loki in the episode was when he discovered all of the Infinity Stones that were meaninglessly stowed away in the confiscated items drawer and used as paperweights for some of the office workers. But, there were quite a few other interesting items in that junk pile too!

©Disney

If you look close, Insider found that you can spot a Honus Wagner baseball card (one of the most valuable cards of all time), a casino chip, and an upside-down crucifix. So, could this be a reference to Mephisto?

Time Variance Authority Compared to Big Brother

One of the big questions that we’ve already got on our minds is whether the Time Variance Authority are the good guys or the bad guys. So far, the show has seemingly set up Mobius as Loki’s partner and “savior,” but it’s not very clear whether this agency can actually be trusted.

And, in one of the hallways, you could spot a poster for the TVA that said “Always Watching” on the top, giving off some major Big Brother vibes.

©Disney

So, is this agency really working for the betterment of the universe? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Another Nexus Reference

There was yet another reference that we’ve seen before in WandaVision in the first episode. During the instructional video that Loki watches, Miss Minutes describes the times where a person goes off their designated time path as “Nexus Events.”

©Disney

We’ve seen Nexus referenced before in a commercial during WandaVision, Episode 6. Many associated the reference to Wanda being known as a “Nexus Being” and “Nexus of All Realities” from the comics, but there is certainly something more here.

Loki is Gender Fluid

And, the Marvel cinematic universe has officially confirmed that Loki is in fact gender fluid. The reference could be spotted on the prison paperwork that Mobius was handed in one of the first few scenes.

©Disney

Now, it has been known that Loki is gender fluid in both Norse mythology and the comics, but this is the first time that we saw it reflected on the screen.

Earth-616

The last detail that you may have missed happened in less than a second. Right after Loki watches how his death was meant to unfold, the film reel runs out and Screen Crush points out that you can see some letters and numbers on the tape. And, if you look close you can see that it says ETH-616. This is actually short for EARTH- 616 which is the multiverse code for the primary universe in the Marvel comics.

©Disney

So, there seems to be more evidence of the multiverse building in this series and though we don’t know who the real villain is just yet, there are a lot of contenders. We can’t wait to keep watching and see what else unfolds!

Of course, we’ll be back with more hidden details and easter eggs that you may miss in the next episode, so stay tuned!
