McDonald's Is Rolling Out a NEW Menu Item...Just for Grandma?!

The fast food chain has just announced a new, limited-time addition to its catalog of McFlurry offerings: The Grandma McFlurry. Yes, you did read that right…

According to Mickey D’s, the Grandma McFlurry – which debuts May 21st – is “sweet – just like grandma – and features a delicious syrup and chopped, crunchy candy pieces (like grandma’s favorite treat that she hid in her purse!) – all blended in our creamy vanilla soft serve. It’s the perfect sweet treat to share with grandma or the grandma-figure in your life.”

So, why exactly is McDonald’s offering a McFlurry themed to Grandmas? Well, according to Tariq Hassan, the chain’s Chief Marketing and Customer Experience Officer, “Grandmas have always held a special place in our hearts, and today they’re having a major moment influencing culture – inspiring trends in fashion, decor and now, even food with our newest McFlurry. He continued, ”The Grandma McFlurry tastes like a trip down memory lane, and we’re excited to give our fans that experience while honoring the grandma figure in all our lives.”

As part of the rollout of the Grandma McFlurry, McDonald’s is launching two major promotional efforts. The first sees the restaurant team with “two breakthrough artists to remake hit songs for the occasion, oldies reimagined with a new sound.” Singer-songwriter Remi Wolf is covering “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)”, while two-time Latin Grammy nominee Jay Wheeler is covering the Latin classic “Piel Canela.”

Secondly, McDonald’s is rolling out Grandma’s McFlurry Mobile – “McDonald’s take on the beloved ice cream truck” – a vehicle that will hand out free samples of the new dessert in Manhattans’s Herald Square from 1:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on May 17th and at several senior centers and assisted living homes in East Harlem from 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. and Flushing, Queens from 3 p.m. – 4 p.m on May 18th. The chain will also be donating to Little Brothers – Friends of the Elderly, a national organization whose mission is to support older adults experiencing isolation and loneliness.
